✨ Personal Update

I’m J. Thorn. I’ve been independently publishing on Amazon since 2009, and since then I’ve been a professional author, podcaster, and musician. Each week I’ll provide a short update on my current projects.

While I’m an old school rocker and a fan of heavy metal, more recently I’ve gotten into dark techno music. I created a fictitious (I hope?) post-apocalyptic DJ by the name of Dyz Topian.

⌨️ ChatGPT: The AI-mazing Content Creator Taking the Freelancing World by Storm

Summary (by ChatGPT)

  • ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, is disrupting the freelancing industry by replacing human freelancers in basic tasks such as writing and transcribing.

  • Clients are being flooded with proposals from ChatGPT, causing mistrust and transactional disputes in the freelancing community.

  • Platforms like Upwork and Fiverr are disclosing the threat of AI to their business and face potential loss of revenue. Freelancers are encouraged to upskill themselves in the face of AI competition.

My Take (by… me)

The rise of ChatGPT has sparked a debate in the freelancing world over whether the process or the result is more important. It's true that ChatGPT has the potential to displace some freelancers, but it also presents an opportunity for new jobs to be created in response to the increasing demand for AI.

It's important to acknowledge that the use of ChatGPT is a disruptive force, and companies like Upwork and Fiverr may feel threatened. However, it's worth remembering that business models are constantly evolving, and nothing lasts forever.

The freelancing world will continue to adapt to new technologies, and it's up to freelancers to upskill themselves and stay ahead of the curve.

🔉 Lemonaid: Revolutionizing AI in the music space

Summary (by ChatGPT)

  • "Squeeze" the most out of Lemonaid, the AI music buddy planting the seeds for your next chart-topper.

  • No need to fret, Lemonaid is here to help break creative barriers with a "note"-worthy co-producer at your fingertips.

  • Striking a chord with over 50 million unique MIDI progressions, Lemonaid's AI keeps getting more "tune"-telligent by the day.

  • Lemonaid: created by musicians, for musicians, ensuring everyone from novices to pros can "scale" new heights in music-making.

My Take (by… me)

I recently began using Lemonaid, and I'm extremely impressed with the outcomes.

It enables users to generate melodies, harmonies with chords, and rhythmic patterns. However, it's important to note that it doesn't create an entire song, but rather a few measures. Lemonaid is designed to assist producers in generating ideas or overcoming creative obstacles, rather than replacing them entirely.

As a DAW plugin, it allows users to export all generated tracks as MIDI files for further sound design and sculpting, enhancing the creative process.

🖼️ AI Art Troubles: Generators Drawn into a Sketchy Legal Situation

Summary (by ChatGPT)

  • Three artists (Andersen, McKernan, and Otiz) sue AI companies Stability AI, DeviantArt, and Midjourney, claiming copyright infringement over AI-generated artwork.

  • The artists allege that unauthorized copying and using their work for AI training created imitations of their styles.

  • AI companies strike back, asking for the lawsuit's dismissal, arguing that the generated images are not similar to the artists' work and no specific infringed images are identified.

  • DeviantArt, an online artist community, denies any liability and claims they've done nothing wrong.

  • Meanwhile, Getty Images is also suing Stable Diffusion for a whopping $1.8 trillion over alleged theft of over 12 million copyrighted photos.

My Take (by… me)

The copyright battle continues to intensify, and it raises questions about the long-term relevance and enforceability of copyright laws. We are undoubtedly in an era where technology has advanced far beyond the capabilities of copyright protection that were designed to safeguard creators' rights decades ago.

One potential solution could involve harnessing the power of blockchain technology to help creatives validate and assert their intellectual property while simultaneously granting permissions for others to create derivative works.

However, it seems that such discussions may still be years away as traditional institutions struggle to adapt and seek ways to stay afloat in this rapidly changing landscape.

🌐 Language Model's Abracadabra: A Blessing or Corporate Hocus Pocus?

Summary (by ChatGPT)

  • Belsky says "adios" to web3 hype, welcomes generative AI's speed and pizzazz

  • Generative AI gives creatives more "room to bloom" by enhancing their skills

  • Trust issues: enterprises fear the AI-unknown and call for a metadata audit trail

  • Belsky predicts practicality will trump "wow factor" for AI biz opportunities

My Take (by… me)

A striking observation I encountered recently at NFTNYC was that when someone utilizes a large language model (LLM), they can immediately grasp how it will change their life. This has never been the case with cryptocurrencies, blockchain, or NFTs. In fact, years after the emergence of NFTs, using them remains incredibly cumbersome, and it is almost impossible to onboard new users.

With AI, the scale of the transformation is instantaneous. However, I am concerned about the potential concentration of this powerful technology in the hands of a few global corporations, and the implications it may have for the widening wealth gap in the United States and beyond.
