Quick reminder that my new guide is out: "How to Ask AI to Create a Style Guide for Your Blog or Newsletter." For just under three dollars, you can enhance every piece of content you create with ChatGPT. There are no gimmicks, no upsells—just a tried-and-true method from someone who's cracked the code of the ChatGPT first draft.

✨ Personal Update

My friends often preface a comment with, “I know you’re not on social, but..” And then they tell me a story about something they saw on social media, which is even less interesting than the original post.

I consider social media to be a necessary evil, and I’m grateful that it helps to add content to my newsletter. But I won’t cry when it dies.

Hopefully it’s dying. If we are the product, and now we’re paying to be the product, I can’t imagine how we’ll be exploited in the future.

🚿 2024 Predicted as AI's Cold Reality Check!

Summary

Generative AI, once the tech darling, is predicted to face a cold, hard reality in 2024. Why? Costs. Running these marvels of code isn't cheap, and businesses are starting to feel the pinch.

Analyst firm CCS Insight warns that the allure of this tech will be dampened by the actual bills coming in. We might need to adjust our expectations and remember: all that glitters isn't gold, especially if it's running on expensive servers.

My Take

I can't jump on the “AI is overhyped” train. From my perspective, it's not just about the buzz; it's about how few of us genuinely understand or have dabbled in generative AI.

And let's talk investments. A few years ago, big tech wasn't pouring their dollars into blockchain or crypto like they are into AI now. Follow the money, right? Yes, regulation might pump the brakes a bit, but that could be a blessing in disguise.

🤖 Making AI Behave: Anthropic's Feature-filled Solution!

Summary

Unpredictable as a teenager's mood, these AI models have had scientists scratching their heads. The core of the issue? Neural networks, which, like a toddler, learn from data, can sometimes produce wildly unpredictable behaviors.

But Anthropic’s eureka moment? They've pinpointed “features” within each neuron, tiny units that help make sense of the chaos. Dive deep, and you’ll find over 4,000 such features, each more interpretable than the neuron itself. The endgame? This could be the key to more predictable AI.

My Take

Anthropic has a flashy announcement right when Big Tech is making it rain on them. Coincidence? Maybe.

But if we push aside my skeptical side for a sec, the findings are promising. Sure, the research might not scale, but the bottom line is that controlling these unpredictable neural networks is a must-have.

🍪 Cookie-Cutter Creativity: Are AI Tools Serving the Same Old Recipe?

Summary

As ad agencies dive deeper into AI, they're finding some tools to be, well, half-baked. There's a rising skepticism, especially when they see the same old same old being churned out by AI.

And while we've got over 360 generative AI companies popping up in 2023 alone, with a whopping fivefold increase in funding for the sector, the results aren't always up to snuff.

70% of digital marketers are feeling swamped by AI's rapid growth, and 42% haven't even been formally trained on AI in marketing. But hope isn't lost. Some agencies are gearing up, training their staff to harness AI's potential, ensuring creativity doesn't become a monotonous drone.

My Take

While generative AI is still taking its baby steps, it's hard to ignore the side-eye from ad agencies. Let's be real, there's a heap of junk out there. The “AI gold rush” seems to be winding down, revealing a landscape littered with hasty, undercooked services.

If 90% of ad agencies could just experiment with ChatGPT, they’d begin to understand the power of this tool. There's no two ways about it – generative AI will be a bigwig in business, especially in marketing.

🧠 Brain Meets Machine: The Future Interface for Designers?

Summary

The three big takeaways for creative professionals:

  1. The AI systems of today are making significant strides in creative domains, but they still struggle with maintaining coherence over extended tasks. This suggests that while AI can assist creative professionals in specific tasks, it's not yet poised to replace the human touch in most creative endeavors.

  2. Brain-Computer Interface and AI Integration: This could open up new horizons for designers, writers, and other professionals to merge human creativity with AI-driven insights without the invasive process of drilling into the skull.

  3. AI could significantly boost the rate of scientific discovery. For marketers, writers, and designers, this means an ever-evolving landscape of information to draw from, leading to more informed and innovative content and designs.

My Take

After diving into that episode's takeaways, I'm itching to give it another listen. It's mind-blowing to think that AI, instead of shaking up the world of manual labor first, made its grand entrance in the realm of creativity.

And, as I've been saying consistently, AI is quickly becoming the new smartphone—a tool so integral that opting out isn't really an option.
